Electric Lawn Mowers

When choosing equipment for cutting your grass, electric lawn mowers are the obvious choice for the small and medium sized garden. You will need an available supply of mains power for the connection of the cable.

These grass cutting machines are easy to operate and require little in the way of on-going maintenance. Storage is straightforward, just brush off the excess grass cuttings after each use and put it in your garden shed, safe and dry until next time. Electric lawn mowers are lighter and generally more manoeuverable than the petrol-engine alternatives.

Hover electric lawn mowers are ideal for small and medium sized gardens. They float on a cushion of air that is generated by the motor. The cutting action is by a blade rotating in a scythe action. They are extremely easy to manoeuvre as there are no wheels and rollers; they can be moved sideways as well as backwards and forwards and can glide over edges. It goes where you push it! It is, therefore, the machine of choice for cutting grass in difficult areas: cutting around spring bulbs, garden ornaments or pathways becomes a simple task. The downside to hover electric mowers is that they do not give a fine cut or that striped effect many traditionalists crave.
 

 

Rotary electric lawn mowers are a popular choice for many gardeners. These machines have wheels and rollers therefore giving the sought after striped effect. They are also excellent for cutting longer grass and work well over uneven or sloping surfaces. Rotary electric lawn mowers are ideal for grassy areas up to about 400 square metres. Anything larger than that and you may want to consider petrol or even ride-on machines. Many gardeners opt for cylinder mowers with their heavy steel roller and front collection grassbox. This is the ideal choice for keen gardeners with have small to medium sized plots who want the classic striped lines with the convenience of electric power.

 

Obviously most conventional electric lawn mowers have a cable, of varying lengths, for connection to the mains power. Always be vigilant with the cable; don't get it tangled, and definitely do not run over it!  It is recommended, as with all outdoor powered equipment, that you use a residual current device (RCD) or circuit breaker. Never use any outdoor powered equipment, including electric lawn mowers, in the rain - water and electricity do not mix. There are now cordless electric lawn mowers available, using re-chargeable battery power - no more cables getting in the way!!!
