It is likely that you already have some kind of boundary made up of a wall, hedge, or garden fencing. The boundaries of your plot need careful consideration. Garden fencing along the boundary offers privacy as well as an opportunity to grow a whole range of plants with the garden fencing acting as a backdrop. If you are at the stage of choosing the type of formal structure for your boundary, then garden fencing is a viable option.

It is generally cheaper than building a brick wall and hedges would take many years to grow to the desired height and thickness. Opting for garden fencing will give you an instant solution. Garden fencing is also a useful structure to put in place to define specific areas on your land. For example, you may want to segregate a vegetable patch from the formal lawned area, or you may use garden fencing as a wind break. Whatever kind of garden fencing you choose there are a number of options available.

Wood Panel Garden Fencing

These usually come as ready-made panels and are secured to wooden or concrete posts. The panels come as close-board or woven but either way they offer a degree of privacy.

Picket and Trellis Garden Fencing

Picket garden fencing will give you a traditional country or cottage style effect and is often painted white. Trellis panels have large gaps in them and are popular when dividing off different sectors. You will be able to see through the panels and they are ideal for growing climbers.

Post and Rail Garden Fencing

This is simply where wooden posts are secured into the ground and are connected by a number of horizontal rails. The number of rails depends upon the height requirement, but will usually be 4 or 5. There is very little security or privacy associated with this form of garden fencing. It really just marks the boundary or acts as a divider for different sectors. It is a popular choice where you have a panoramic vista and you don't want your view blocked by a solid wall.

Care and Maintenance

Wooden garden fencing will need treating every year with a preservative to maintain its colour and prevent rot. If you have elected to paint your picket garden fencing, then repaint it every year to keep it looking good; this will also protect the wood. You can either apply the preservatives with a brush or roller, or you can invest in a sprayer. Whichever option you choose, make sure you cover not just the flat surfaces but all the "nooks and crannies" as well. Regular annual treatment will extend the life and enhance the appearance of all your garden fencing.
