Garden Fountains

Water and especially moving water as provided by garden fountains add a magical quality to any  outdoor space. The young and the not-so-young alike are fascinated by water features. Care needs to be taken when deciding on the types of garden fountains you choose. There are of course certain hazzards associated with water and where there are concerns regarding the safety of children, the water does not have to be deep. Some garden fountains, where the water is held in a self-contained system, will be safe for children.

You will need an electricity supply to power the submersible pump.  It is possible to buy pumps utilising solar power and this may be an option where the planned siting of  garden fountains is too far away from a conventional power source.

Garden fountains can be installed in a variety of ponds of varying size, shape and depth. This could be either an existing pond or you could decide to create a new pond. The  spray effect is determined by the type of jet that is fitted to the outlet on the submersible pump. These are often called spray jets and you could choose from many different types. Hovever, you must bear in mind the size of the pond and ensure that the spray  does not leave the surface area of the pond. This would eventually cause the water level to drop which is a major concern if you have fish in the pond!

Garden fountains can be installed without the need for a pond, thereby having no open standing water. There is a water reservoir or sump in an underground container. This makes these kinds of garden fountains ideal where there are likely to be children about. It is also an excellent option for the small, patio, terrace- or odd-shaped outdoor environment.
Many such garden fountains can be wall- mounted and can be utilised to fill that ugly or shady corner. You will still need a power supply for the pump which sits in the underground tank. The design is such that the water runs off the structure and goes back into the sump and is then recycled through the pump. These types of garden fountains also have the advantage of easy maintainance, there are no fish or plants to attend to.

These are so-called because the water bubbles up from a hole in the top of the feature. The water then trickles down the sides and finds its way back into the sump. These types of garden fountains do not have the dramatic effect of the water jets but nevertheless, as well as looking good ,you will enjoy the sound of running water. The composition and structure can be varied. Here you can use your imagination! Some common yet decorative options include millstones or grindstones, large terracotta pots or jars and drilled rocks.

This is an arrangement whereby a water tank stands on the ground adjacent to the wall, and holds the pump and the water reservoir. An ornamental outlet is fixed to the wall above and a jet of water squirts back into the tank. The ornamental outlet is often a lions head, however, it can be anything you like - it is your chance to be creative!
 Wall-mounted garden fountains offer a great focal-point and are ideal for small spaces.
 

 

When installing whichever types of garden fountains you decide upon, it is important to plan the task thoroughly. Electric cables and water pipes should be buried or hidden wherever possible. It is always a good idea to consult a qualified electrician when dealing with power cables. Garden fountains will give many hours of pleasure ; the water itself will attract wildlife and the sound of running water from garden fountains is always soothing and therapeutic.
