You will need an assortment of lawn and garden tools to create that perfect patch of lush green grass. The maintenance of grass obviously includes the regular cutting with either a hand mower or a power mower. General on-going maintenance in the form of
scarification, aeration and edge trimming are all undertaken using a variety of lawn and garden tools.
Cutting
Mowers are essential for your lawn and garden tools collection. Mowers come in two main types:
rotary and cylinder. Cylinder mowers can either be manual or power operated and are associated with the striped effect which is often sought after. Manual or push mowers are ideal for small plots, they are easy to operate and there is no fuss needed in connecting power cables or maintaining petrol engines.
Powered mowers become an obvious choice as the size of the plot gets bigger. Mowers can be expensive items, so clean them after use: brush off the loose grass and wipe off any moisture with an old cloth. Always store your mower in a
shed to ensure it remains clean and dry between uses.
The removal of moss and layers of thatch from the base of the grass stems is an important task for your lawn and garden tools. Use a rake and this will also reduce the accumulation of dead grass that is left behind after mowing. A simple moss-removal rake which has long flexible wire tines will suffice for most situations. However, it can become hard work so either wheeled rakes or even powered rakes are a sensible option for larger grassy areas. Don't be alarmed by the huge quantity of debris collected when using the lawn and garden tools. All this organic matter needs to be removed to improve the health of the grass and the process should be undertaken at least once a year.
Poor surface drainage as a result of the compaction of the soil, especially when the turf has been well trodden-down, needs to be addressed on an annual basis. The turf needs to be aerated. This can be done by simply spiking the turf with a
fork; stab the grass
with the fork to a depth of about 4 inches in patterns all over the grass to make the air holes. For large areas consider getting a mechanical aerator to make the job easier.

Trimming
Trimming the edges is always recommended to make a neat and tidy appearance. When you have taken the time to cut your grass then it is worth while finishing the job off properly by trimming the edges. Long handled edging shears are ideal for established areas and they allow you to neaten the edges in a quick and efficient manner. There is no bending required so back strain is kept to a minimum. Half-moon edgers are useful for trimming edges as well as for shaping and cutting. |
