Why choose rotary mowers?

Rotary mowers come with either petrol engines, electric power cables or re-chargeable battery pack. Petrol engine machines are generally more powerful and can readily cut long grass and even wet grass. The scythe action of the blade gives a close finish to the lawn. The height of the blade is easily adjusted to give the length of cut you most desire. When you start cutting in the spring, set the blade high: as much as 4 cm. Gradually lower the height of the blade as the lawn gets used to being cut and aim for a height of about 2.5 cm, this is ideal for most family lawns. Rotary mowers are a good choice for uneven or sloping lawns. If you want the traditional striped effect choose from the ones that have a built-in roller at the back. Wheels support the frame and make it easy to guide the machine, especially in straight lines.

Considerations when choosing rotary mowers.

How big is your lawn? Electric rotary mowers are ideal for small lawns. They are light and easy to manouever. rotary mowers come in a variety of cutting widths and for small lawns a cutting width of up to 30cms would be ideal. For larger lawns it is recommended that a wider cutting width of up to 40cms is considered. Obviously larger machines become heavier, especially when you opt for the petrol engined version. Petrol engined machines are very popular for larger gardens when there is a bigger area of lawn to cut. For really large lawns, of say over half an acre, it may be worth investing in a ride-on petrol powered machine.

General tips

Rotary mowers have a grass box fitted to the back to collect the clippings. These clippings should be added to your compost bin.  It is highly recommended that you use the box and collect the grass clippings from the lawn. Lawns do look smarter when the clippings have been collected. You can use rotary mowers without the grass box; this could be an option when you want to give the lawn a quick "once over". These short clippings will disappear quickly into the lawn, but don't do it too often. This should not be done when the grass is long since clods of grass left on the lawn, as well as not looking good, will kill off patches of grass.

Care and Maintenance

After each use remove any build up of grass from around the blade and underside, and brush off any clippings from the upper surface.  At least once a year it is worth removing the blade, cleaning it thoroughly and sharpening it with a metal file; this will also remove any burrs and chips that have built up over the season.  Cutting grass can be an arduous and repetitive business, but if you want to have a well kept lawn then you must address the task on a regular basis. A sensible selection from the range of rotary mowers available will enable you to undertake the task with the minimum of effort.
